• Grab a sheet of paper, a pencil, and a tape measure.
• Start by drawing a rough diagram of your room, taking care to sketch any closets, any walls that may protrude out, steps, etc.
• Grab your tape measure and measure each of the areas you want floored, making sure to round up to the nearest inch. As you are getting the sizes, write them on the diagram as you go. Make sure to measure your steps rise and run as well as count the number of steps.

Note that the number you come up with for total yards or feet may not be the actual amount you need, seeing as how we may need to figure a little extra for pattern matching or seams.
